Shopping in Shanghai

To all tourists Shanghai is a world famous shopping centre. We gave it a name of "Urban Business City". Our most famous street is Nanjing Road east. It also named China's Best Street. However, as a Shanghainese I barely go to Nanjing Road east. We thought only farm people shopping there although the lights there are very luxury. It is a good place for tourists because of the view.

Than you probably will ask where you should go. Here are the solutions:

If you want something fashion and brandy you need to go to Huai Hai Road. In there you will see mostly: Guess, La Senza, Esprit, Lee, Live's, Nike, Adidas, etc. This place is not very expensive, but with lots of famous designers. Also Huai Hai Road also has some high fashion stores such as Parda, HUGE Boss, Dior, Channel, etc.
However, if you only want high fashion brand you may go to Nanjing Road West.

Where will teenage go shopping in Shanghai? Of course Qi Pu Road. Cloth there are super cheap. If you are lucky enough you may buy a full 28" suit case of cloth with $100.00 Canadian.

Old Shanghai

We walked around the new urban city of Shanghai last week. Now let’s see how the old towns look
like. Shanghai as an oriental Paris since early 1920s, but even it is an alluvial city it still has a long history.

During Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty the centre of Shanghai is not the place has the
landmarks of Shanghai now. It was in Songjiang, which is the countryside of the
city. In old time Songjiang Shanghai was just like Winnipeg Manitoba, which is
the centre of the province. However, nowadays we should say Shanghai’s centre
is Lu Jia Zui.

Lots of people say Shanghai is only an upstart. There are no stories and histories behind this
city; unlikely, Beijing is a famous historic and cultural city. Today, let’s go and have a look at the historical look Shanghai.

In Ming and Qing Dynasty, Shanghai was a water city. People lived here were mostly fishing
men. Also the city was built up water.

When we talk about water city we will always think about Venice where is famous for its
architectures, but look at these- China’s Venice. We have our own style, and we
also can build our buildings upon the water.

Of course, when Shanghai people talk about these old towns we will always think about those famouse food in those towns. Most of towns have some delious food there. I have some pictures of those food. I don't know how to discribe them. But I think give your guys some imiges will be better than I tell you some Chinese name to make you confused about what is that stuff.

How Fast Shanghai Develops

If you live in Shanghai you have to accept one thing—developing. Most people know that when you diet; you maybe can’t find any difference during the time, but sometimes your friend who haven’t seem you for a long time will say: Oh amazing, how much weight you have loosen in this two month. You can’t see any differences because you have been getting used to it, and also it only changes a little bit. However, live in Shanghai you will see Shanghai is changing everyday. I am not telling a joke, but you may can’t find your house if you leave Shanghai for one year.

Here I am going to show you some pictures to prove what I told you.

This is the same angle of the same place; however, the up picture was taken 30 years ago. The second picture was taken in 2009. When you see this you have to say that China develops so fast that you can’t even imaging. And you have to go and see the real Shanghai by your own eye. There was nothing in the other side of the river 30 years ago. Nowadays, it has China’s tallest building there. And also that is the biggest Chinese economic centre. From the picture you can see the tree landmarks of Shanghai: the Oriental Pear Tower, Jinmao Tower, and the World Financial Centre. They represent the different developing time slop of Shanghai. In 1994, we built the Oriental Pear TV Tower to tell the world we are starting recovering. China will wake up shortly to stand on the top of the world. In 1998, Jinmao tower appeared to our eye. It has 88 floors. Ten years later, the World Financial Centre comes to our life, which was built with 101 floors high. Pudong, many people say that is a place changed mostly in Shanghai. That is true. Therefore, let’s see how much in old urban centre changed in these 15 years. Here is the Nanjing Road when I was young. It was around 1994.

And this is in the beginning of 2008. Same place different time. You will see a totally different Shanghai.

I had some other pictures of old Shanghai and new Shanghai. They might not in the same angle but I still want to show you how much it changed in this 20 years.

Remember, this place named Shanghai. this is not in New York City, or Chicago. This city has more than 3000 skyscrapers. This number is doubled the number of New York City.

This is a city that you have too visit in your life.

Remember This Date 11.15

I am very sorry everyone. I was supposed to show you around Shanghai for the second day this week. However, there was something urgent happened in my hometown for the past week. Let’s pray for that poor city, pray for those people have already gone to the heaven during that fire accident on November 15^th.

I am not here to criticize our present Secretary-Yu but since he came to Shanghai no one likes him. We can’t vote to get our Secretary but waiting for our Chairman to order one for the city. No matter we like the Secretary or not we have to accept the order from the top leader of China.

As everyone knows, Shanghai has just finished the 2010 World EXPO, and our slogan is: Better city, better life. Yes, that was our old Secretary’s idea. People love our ex-Secretary because he did a lot of things for the people who live in Shanghai. He also made Shanghai people’s life away better than any other cities’ but Chairman Hu doesn’t like him because he belongs to the Party of our ex-Chairman Jiang. In another hand, as China is a community country we have to share our GDP to other cities. However, Secretary Chan wanted to keep them for Shanghai people. When he was on his position we got better city construction because he would use a large amount of money to build Shanghai, but donate the money to Party Centre Committee.

Look, here is our new Secretary Yu did. He allowed a construction under table. This big construction did have a permission form from the fire station but no one understood how they got it because what they did was absolutely unsafe. They use polyurethane foam to make the building become energy efficient building; however, that building was 28 floors high they have to use scaffolds to close all building in with a lot of moso bamboos and nylon net. As we can see, those three things are all inflammable, especially, the polyurethane foam. It took 5 hours to put down the fire for that building, which was unbelievable. People said that the first fire truck had arrived the place after 18 minutes they phoned the police office, which normally takes 6 minutes for them to arrive a fired place.

You also can’t believe that those government people asked those victims stay at a school gym and only give them some yoga carpet to sleep on. However, if it happened with Secretary Chan he would provide those victims at least a motel room to stay at once. Even those Secretary Yu did provide them a motel room but that was his secondary choice.

There are 58 people were dead in this accident, 22 of them were males, and 36 were females. There are also another 71 people are still in the hospital. And there were also 56 people missing during this accident. I have a big question mark for this “missing”. Where did they go? They went to the Mars?

I remembered when I was in school we have safety studies. But that was just an oral class about all kinds of accident. When they talk about fires they only tell us: “When you say fires don’t go into the fire because it is dangers; just run away, and then call the police.” However, they had never taught us where to go, and how to escape. In this big accident, lots of people went to the roof to wait for help. Therefore, no one noticed that smoke goes up. When helicopters came the smoke was already too heavy they couldn’t do anything. And those people who were on the roof were missing after the put down the fire. They might go downstairs but no one knows. They might also go to the other world with UFO. Unfortunately, there were still a family who lived on second floor were dead in this accident. Why? The reason was they had never tried to escape from the house; they were waiting for people to save them.

There were too many things unbelievable during this accident. The only thing I can do is to pray for them. And I hope everyone who read this article can pray for them too.

May the victims rest in peace, and the survivors be strong.

Welcome to Shanghai

Welcome to Shanghai: Travel in Shanghai—Day One

Welcome to Shanghai. This is my new blog to introduce my hometown Shanghai to everyone.

After a long day of flying you will arrive in Pu Dong International Airport. It is one of the biggest airports in China. Make a deep breath because it is a brand new place you will spend at least 5 days here.

Day one, you will be introduce to the landmark place of Shanghai—Lu Jia Zui.

It will take 40 mins drive to go to Lu Jia Zui from the airport. However, if there is traffic then you might be lucky to there in one hour. Luckily, I guarantee you to arrive Lu Jia Zui in 30 minutes with public transportation. The airport maglev is the fastest way to let you go to downtown. There will be a maximum waiting time of 15 minutes. And the travel time will be 8 minutes. Then take a metro for 2 or 3 stops you will arrive Lu Jia Zui.

Lu Jia Zui is now the most attractive place in Shanghai since the reform and open policy of China. It was a place with lots of weeds 30 years ago. However, now, few people could believe the scene in the front of you is in China. The landmarks here are Shanghai Oriental Pear Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and the World Financial Centre. From 1994 to 2009 Shanghai’s new hight is replaced again and again. Now the World Financial Centre is the highest building in Shanghai. It has 101 floors. However, the new hight will replace it soon. The new Shanghai centre will appear to the world in 2014. That will be 691 metres tall.

Lu Jia Zui is Shanghai’s new heart. It contains most of the world famous companies. It is the new economic centre of Shanghai. Come and find your own office here. Or you can also visit here with your passion.
